- The Tribe has not yet played a game that counts, but David Dellucci has already found himself in a familiar place, on the disabled list. Dellucci's injury opens the door for Trevor Crowe, a 25-year-old switch-hitting outfield prospect who had just been sent down to Triple-A Columbus earlier in the week when Josh Barfield won the last position player spot on the team.
- In my opinion, this is good news for the Tribe's overall roster quality. David Dellucci hit 29 homers during one season while only hitting 72 long balls in his other 11 years in the league. What does that lend itself towards? *COUGH* Steroids *COUGH*. All kidding aside, Dellucci is old (35), he's injury-riddled, and he should collect his paycheck from the Tribe in a ski mask. His average in the .230s the last two years along with just 15 homers and 67 RBI in over 500 at-bats is far from what the Tribe paid for in a 3-year, 11 million dollar contract.
- Meanwhile, Crowe gives the Tribe a number of things they are short on. He has the speed to pinch-run in late game situations, and he can also get on base himself and steal bases. This spring, Crower did a solid job of getting on base and doing the little things well. Trevor can play all three outfield positions as well. Last season, Crowe split time between Akron and Buffalo and hit a combined .302 with 9 homers and 41 RBI while stealing 18 bases in 25 attempts. At 25, the time is now for Crowe, and he is ready to be at the big league level. Furthermore, the time has come for the Tribe to cut ties with Del-loser and send him to old folks home where he can take all the 'roids he pleases.
- Meanwhile, word came today that Browns WR Donte' Stallworth will be charged with DUI manslaughter. I feel odd calling him a Browns wide receiver because that would mean that he a) actually played in some games for the Browns and b) actually caught some passes as a wide receiver. He did very little of those two things last season as he nursed a variety of injuries including a hang nail, athlete's foot, runny nose, watery eyes, and a canker sore. Being serious now, Stallworth faces going away for a long time, and while I do feel for him, I feel even more for the victim's family. Getting behind the wheel intoxicated is just inexcusable, and Stallworth should have known that people look for athletes to make mistakes so he should have been overly cautious with alcohol being involved. You can be sure, however, that either way Stallworth's playing days, or at least his days of standing on the sidelines with the Browns, are over.
- The Browns now have a giant smoking crater at the receiver positions. The Browns currently have Braylon "Butterfingers" Edwards, Joshua Cribbs, recent signee David Patten, and the undersized Syndric Steptoe on the roster after cutting Joe Jurevicius and given Stallworth's current legal issues. After the Winslow trade, the Browns' tight ends are Steve Heiden, recovering from knee surgery, second year player Martin Rucker, and offseason signee Robert Royal. Yep, it looks like the Browns might just be implementing the "three yards and a cloud of dust" motto of Woody Hayes. Let's just hope it's not "two yards, one yard, incomplete pass, and then punt".
- Finally, the Denver Broncos have made it crystal clear that they will attempt to move QB Jay Cutler, and it sounds as if the Browns (unfortunately) may be interested in getting in on a deal involving Cutler. While it appears that it would be a three-team deal, the Browns would likely give up one of their two QBs in Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn in exchange for draft picks. Josh McDaniels, the new Broncos coach, is a fan of Quinn as he worked under Charlie Weis in New England, and it sounds like the Browns would at least entertain the thought of trading Quinn for the right price.
- How do you think the already-tortured Cleveland Browns fanbase will react to trading a charasmatic and promising player such as Quinn? Well, I can see it now. An angry mob heading towards Cleveland Browns Stadium decked out with pitchforks, burning torches, and sledgehammers, ready to tear the place down.
And that is no April Fool!
